Sam Billings cello, 2020, Los Angeles USA

$28,750.00
Code: CL#5630
This instrument is part of our fourth annual Contemporary American Makers Exhibition.

Description:

The sound of this instrument closely matches its golden physical appearance. The sound is well-balanced across all registers with a strong and punchy low end and a bright and tender upper register.

The back is formed from two pieces of quarter cut maple, marked by medium width flame slanting slightly downward towards the sides. The wood of the scroll and ribs is similar to that of the back. The two-piece spruce top has straight and narrow grain with clawing on the upper bass side and lower treble side. The instrument is covered with a golden brown varnish with a pale gold ground. The cello is in new condition.

About the maker:

A student of Rebecca Elliott at The Chicago School of Violin Making, Sam Billings continued to refine his craft from 2003-2013 in Chicago, where he was represented by several violin dealers, including the world class firms of Kenneth Warren & Son, Carl Becker & Son, and Bein & Fushi. During this time he built over one hundred instruments that were acquired by discerning players such as Edward Dusinberre, first violinist of the Takács Quartet, and Yvonne Lam of Eighth Blackbird. He currently builds his violins on a Guarneri pattern at his studio in Los Angeles.
