Johann Georg Thir (c.1710-1779) was born in Prim, Schongau, Germany and mainly worked in Vienna. His instruments are highest quality Viennese-style with a high Stainer arch (somewhat reduced arch after 1775). Most of his instruments use a long model, with dark, semi-transparent chocolate varnish.
This 3/4 cello was made circa 1770 in Vienna.
