Beautiful Violin from W.E. Hill & Sons, 1911
Mature, even, sweet, powerful
The W.E. Hill & Sons name speaks for itself. One of the most renowned names in the history of contemporary violin making, their instruments are praised for their exquisite craftsmanship as well as their incredible tone. With an impressive history of crafting and trading fine stringed instruments, bows and accessories, they also established a legendary reputation with their expertise in historic stringed instruments.
The most striking feature of this fine violin is the beautiful two piece back. Crafted from two pieces of maple, it features exquisite medium-narrow flaming that slants down from the center joint. The figuring of the wood combined with the lovely varnish choice results in an instrument that is visually quite superb. The wood of the back matches that of the ribs and scroll, resulting in a beautiful unity across the instrument. The top is formed from two pieces of spruce with very even narrow grain. The violin is varnished a beautiful reddish brown that has been darkened and shaded over a golden ground. The elegance of the scroll, which is lined with black, and the sound holes display the fine craftsmanship that has become synonymous with the W.E. Hill and Sons name.
The beauty of the violin is matched if not exceeded by its beautiful tone. It is truly spectacular to play, and features all of the characteristics that one would look for in a professional instrument. It is as powerful as it is sweet, and the tone is even across all registers. The sound is beautifully mature, displaying a resonance that has opened over time, and is a wonderful representation of the craftsmanship expected from the maker.
The interior label reads: William E. Hill & Sons, Makers, 140 New Bond Street, London 1911, No. 247, England. There is also a label on the treble side of the interior with the number 1551. The violin is in excellent condition.
