Description:

Made by the contemporary Hungarian luthier Lájos Kónya, this cello is very comfortable to play and has a beautiful dark and mellow tone.

The back is made from two pieces of quarter-cut maple, marked by medium narrow flame, slanting slightly downward towards the sides. The wood of the ribs and scroll are similar to that of the back. The two-piece spruce top has straight and narrow grain, widening at the flanks, with a small knot on the lower treble side. The instrument is covered in a dark gold varnish with a pale gold ground beneath. The cello is in excellent condition.

 

About the maker:

Lájos Kónya is an instrument maker from Tatabánya, Hungary. The instrument making craft runs deep in the Kónya family with his father, brother, and two grandsons also being established violin makers in Europe. He has been working independently in Tatabánya since 1969. His instruments are based on the models of the great Italian masters, in addition to his own models.
