Description:
This unlabeled 4/4 German violin has a warm, clear, robust sound. The tone is mellow and even across all four strings.
The back is formed from two pieces of quarter-cut maple, marked by medium-width flame, which slants downward from the center joint. The wood on the ribs and scroll is similar to that of the back. The grain of the two-piece spruce top is mostly straight and narrow.
The instrument is covered with a warm auburn brown varnish, over a light brown ground. The varnish is highly antiqued and shaded by the maker, which includes a great deal of black patina. This instrument is in very good condition, with moderate wear, and one well-repaired crack below the treble f-hole.
