"As Corelli states on the title, only three parts of the Concertino are obligatory; in other words, the concertos can also be performed as trio-sonatas....If there is a viola present, this would complete a string quartet...The characteristic charm and general effect of these works can, however, only be realized if presented entirely in concertino and grosso form. A quartet, simply arranged, will suffice for the playing of the grosso; it is, however, more effective to add two to four violins, one or two violas, one or two cellos, and a double-bass. The concertino parts should be taken by soloists and the thorough-bass player included..."
