He studied violin with Edward Elgar, who was very fond of him, and he was the first blind musician to take an Oxford degree since John Stanley in the early 18th century. He toured the USA as a recitalist and composed a variety of music, of which his organ music is best known. The “Canzona” is dedicated to his friend, the reknowned violist, Lionel Tertis.
