A prolific composer by the age of 15, he studied with Boulanger before entering the Juilliard School of Music, where his composition teachers included Vittorio Giannini. At 19 he received the first doctorate awarded by the school. He has taught at Juilliard, the Manhattan School of Music and the Cincinnati Conservatory; he has also directed the Atlanta Opera (1980–84). Early in 1984 he moved to California to work in films and television.(Grove Online)
