PUBLISHER'S NOTES
Gaetano Donizetti (Bergamo 1797-1848), the most prolific 19th Century Italian Opera composer, had a genuine passion for composing instrumental music, mostly patterned after Haydn and Mozart.
A persuasive proof of his reverence for the Masters is his 19 string quartets, many orchestral works, and numerous concerti for various instruments.
The autographed score of the present Quintet is preserved at the Library of the Conservatory of Music "San Pietro a Majella" in Naples. The precise date of composition is unknown, but the piece may safely be attributed to Donizetti's early creative period.
