The back is formed from two pieces of quarter-cut maple, marked by faint medium width flame, which slants downward from the center joint. The wood of the ribs and scroll are of stronger narrow flame. The two piece spruce top has straight and medium-width grain. The instrument is covered with a yellow-brown varnish that has been lightly shaded by the maker, revealing a dark gold ground beneath. The violin is in excellent condition.
